Introduction
Not every construction activity contributes equally to the progress of a project or monitored work package.
Activity weights allow your team to define the relative contribution of each tracked activity. DatuBIM then normalizes those weights to 100% and combines them with each activity's physical progress to calculate weighted overall completion.
For example, a major foundation activity may contribute more to overall completion than a smaller backfilling activity, even if both are being tracked individually.
Before You Begin
Before configuring activity weights:
- Confirm the activities you want included in Progress Tracking.
- Make sure the team's weighting approach has been agreed upon.
- Use the same weighting logic consistently across the monitored scope.
- Remember that the weight of an activity is separate from the way its physical progress is measured.
- Confirm that every activity intended to contribute to weighted completion has a Weight value. Activities without a weight are excluded from the weighted completion calculation.
Helpful Note: Activity progress shows how far that specific activity has progressed toward completion. Activity weight determines how much that activity contributes to the overall progress calculation.
Understand How Activity Weights Work
Each tracked activity is assigned a weight value.
The weight represents that activity's relative contribution compared with the other activities being monitored.
The values entered do not need to add up to 100. DatuBIM automatically calculates each activity's normalized percentage based on its relative weight and ensures that the normalized total equals 100%.
For example, if several activities are assigned different weight values, DatuBIM converts those into normalized percentages. Those normalized percentages determine how much each activity contributes to the overall progress calculation.
How Weight Affects Overall Completion
Overall completion considers both:
- The activity's normalized weight
- The activity's actual progress toward completion
In simple terms:
Activity contribution = Normalized Activity Weight x Activity Progress
For example, if an activity represents 25% of the monitored scope and is 80% complete, it contributes 20 percentage points toward overall completion.
DatuBIM applies the same weighting principle to both actual and planned completion:
Actual Completion = Σ(Normalized Activity Weight × Actual Physical Completion)
Planned Completion = Σ(Normalized Activity Weight × Planned Completion)
This prevents a project with many small activities from appearing further along simply because more individual activities have been completed. Instead, overall progress reflects the relative contribution of the work being performed.
Choose a Weighting Method
The appropriate weighting method depends on the project-controls information available to your team.
Cost / BAC Weighting
When reliable cost information is available, activity weights can be based on each activity's share of the total approved budget for the monitored scope of work, commonly referred to as Budget at Completion (BAC).
In DatuBIM, the platform does not require you to select a separate "BAC weighting" mode. Instead, your team determines the appropriate cost-based values, enters those values in the Weight column, and DatuBIM automatically calculates the Normalized (%) value for each activity.
Example
In the screenshot above, the Weight values represent cost-based activity weights:
- WALL K60: 60,000
- Catch basins: 750,000
- Drainage manholes - 1.2x1.2: 250,000
- Drainage manholes - 1x1: 500,000
- H: 18,000
The total entered weight is 1,578,000. DatuBIM then normalizes those values to 100% and calculates each activity's relative contribution:
- WALL K60: 3.8%
- Catch basins: 47.53%
- Drainage manholes - 1.2x1.2: 15.84%
- Drainage manholes - 1x1: 31.69%
- H: 1.14%
This means that although five activities are being tracked, Catch basins contributes the largest share to the overall weighted completion because it has the highest cost-based weight.
Duration-Based Weighting
When reliable cost or resource information is not available, planned duration can be used as a simpler way to determine the relative weight of each activity.
With this method, the activity's planned duration is entered as the Weight value. Longer-duration activities therefore contribute more to the overall weighted completion than shorter-duration activities. DatuBIM then normalizes the entered values to 100%.
Example
Using the same activities shown in the BAC example, assume the planned durations are:
- WALL K60: 20 days
- Catch basins: 60 days
- Drainage manholes - 1.2x1.2: 30 days
- Drainage manholes - 1x1: 45 days
- H: 15 days
The total planned duration is 170 days.
For this example, enter 20, 60, 30, 45, and 15 into the Weight column. DatuBIM will automatically normalize those values to approximately:
- WALL K60: 11.76%
- Catch basins: 35.29%
- Drainage manholes - 1.2x1.2: 17.65%
- Drainage manholes - 1x1: 26.47%
- H: 8.82%
Duration-based weighting can be useful for schedule-focused reporting, but planned duration does not necessarily reflect the cost, complexity, or resource effort associated with an activity.
Advanced or Hybrid Weighting
When reliable project-controls information is available, a hybrid weighting method can be used to account for several factors rather than relying only on cost or duration.
The recommended hybrid method considers:
- Cost
- Planned duration
- Resources or planned man-days
- Critical-path importance
For each activity, the project team first determines the applicable coefficient for each factor. The raw activity weight is then calculated as:
Raw Weightᵢ = Cost Coefficientᵢ × Duration Coefficientᵢ × Resource Coefficientᵢ × Critical-Path Coefficientᵢ
The resulting weights are then normalized:
Normalized Weightᵢ (%) = Raw Weightᵢ ÷ Σ Raw Weight × 100
The individual coefficients are not entered separately in DatuBIM. The project team calculates the resulting weight using its project-controls methodology and enters that final value in the Weight column. DatuBIM then normalizes the entered Weight values across the monitored activities.
Helpful Note: DatuBIM does not determine which weighting methodology your project should use. Your team determines the appropriate relative values - such as cost, planned duration, or a calculated hybrid weight - and enters those values in the Weight column. DatuBIM then automatically calculates the normalized percentage for each activity.
Activity weights can be reviewed and updated in two ways:
- From an individual tracked activity, where you can update that activity's weight while viewing the weights of the other tracked activities for comparison.
- From the Gantt chart, where you can review and adjust all tracked activity weights collectively.
Manage All Activity Weights from the Gantt Chart
Use the Gantt chart when you want to establish or update the weighting structure across multiple tracked activities.
From the Tracked Activities area:
- Locate View Gantt Chart.
- Open the three-dot menu next to the Gantt controls.
- Select Manage Activity Weights.
4. In the Manage Activity Weights window, enter or review the applicable value in the Weight column.
5. Review the automatically calculated Normalized (%) values.
6. Select Save when the weights are correct.
Update the Weight of an Individual Activity
You can also review all activity weights and update the weight of a specific activity directly from its Activity Card.
Select the icon within the Activity Weight field to open Compare Activity Weights.
The Compare Activity Weights window displays the weights and normalized percentages of the other tracked activities for context. However, only the Weight value for the selected activity can be edited.
After updating the selected activity's weight, select Apply.
Review the Normalized Weights
After activity weights have been entered, review the Normalized (%) values to confirm that the resulting distribution reasonably represents the work being monitored.
DatuBIM automatically calculates each activity's normalized percentage based on its relative weight, with the normalized values totaling 100%.
As you review the weighting structure, look for:
- Activities with a normalized percentage that appears disproportionately high or low.
- Missing Weight values, because activities without a weight are excluded from weighted completion.
- Activities that should not be included in the monitored scope.
- Weight values that were determined using a different methodology than the rest of the project.
The goal is not for every activity to have the same weight. The normalized percentages should reflect each activity's relative contribution based on the weighting methodology selected by the project team.
Helpful Note: If one activity's Weight value is changed, the normalized percentages of the other activities will also change because DatuBIM recalculates each activity's share of the total weight.
How Weights Appear in the Dashboard
Once the activity weights are configured, DatuBIM uses the normalized values when calculating weighted progress in the Progress Dashboard.
Within the activity table, the % Weighted value represents the normalized contribution assigned to each activity.
DatuBIM combines this weighting with each activity's progress toward completion to calculate weighted overall progress.
This allows project teams to understand both:
- How far each individual activity has progressed toward completion.
- How much that activity contributes to the overall monitored progress.
For example, an activity that is 100% complete will have a much greater impact on overall progress if it represents 30% of the monitored scope than a completed activity that represents only 3%.
Keep the Weighting Method Consistent
Once the project team agrees on a weighting methodology, use that methodology consistently throughout the monitored scope.
Changing activity weights can change the overall weighted progress value even when no additional physical work has occurred.
For consistent reporting:
- Establish the weighting method before relying on weighted progress for management reporting.
- Document the basis used to determine activity weights.
- Apply the same methodology consistently across comparable activities.
- Review significant changes with the appropriate project-controls or management stakeholders before modifying established weights.
Maintaining a consistent weighting approach makes progress results easier to compare throughout the life of the project.
